Holtspur Bottom Butterfly Reserve

Plants on the reserve

Comon Spotted Orchid Common Spotted-orchid. Can be seen on the reserve in June and July.

At Holtspur Bottom we are trying to restore an area largely spoilt by ploughing and reseeding with rye–grass to something more like the chalk grassland that was previously here. Starting in 2014 we are organising a systematic plant survey to help us determine if our management is taking the restoration in the right direction. We are hoping to compare the ‘natural’ flora of the unploughed parts of the reserve with the flora in the areas that we reseeded with wild flowers when we took over management of the site (see the History of Holtspur Bottom for more information).

As well as gaining a clearer picture of which plants we have on the reserve, we will be monitoring the changing proportions of particular plants in specific areas of the reserve.

So that we can monitor the same areas over time, you will see a number of red–topped posts throughout the reserve, marking the locations of the squares we are monitoring in detail.

A list of plants recorded on the reserve is available below. It incorporates plants recorded in a partial survey we undertook in 1999 (before any management work by Butterfly Conservation had taken place), as well as plants recorded at the nearby Holtspur Bank Local Nature reserve. This makes an interesting comparison, since Holtspur Bank was never 'improved' for agriculture in the way Holtspur Bottom was. The species list for Holtspur Bank LNR is also available separately below.
